The legal battle between Epic Games and Apple continues to escalate, with a new development frustrating the hopes of many Fortnite fans. Following a series of twists and turns in the lawsuit initiated by Epic Games against Apple’s business policies, a new dark chapter has emerged, halting plans to bring the popular game back to iOS.
Apple took the drastic step of canceling Epic Games’ developer account on iOS, known as Epic Sweden. This account was crucial for Epic to implement changes that would allow Fortnite’s return to iOS, in line with the guidelines of the Digital Markets Act in Europe (DMA). This law aims to promote competition by allowing third-party digital stores and creators to offer their products without requiring users to complete transactions exclusively through the App Store.
Epic Games and its CEO, Tim Sweeney, have expressed profound disappointment with Apple’s decision, arguing that it undermines competition and represents a serious affront. In a statement, Epic lamented, “By canceling our developer account, Apple is eliminating a significant competitor from the Apple App Store. This action undermines our ability to compete fairly and sends a clear warning to other developers considering challenging Apple’s practices. If Apple continues to have the power to ban third-party markets from iOS at its whim, no sensible developer would be willing to risk using a third-party app store, fearing being permanently excluded from their user base at any time.”
In turn, Apple justified its action by stating that Epic Games is considered an untrustworthy entity. According to the company’s official version, the cancellation of the developer account and the removal of Epic Games from the App Store are based on security and reliability issues. Apple emphasizes that it is crucial for its platform to maintain high standards of integrity and security, and that Epic Games’ history of violating previous contractual terms is a determining factor.
Phil Schiller, an Apple executive, countered Tim Sweeney’s criticisms, stating, “Epic’s criticisms of our DMA compliance plan, along with its history of contractual breaches, raise serious doubts about Epic’s willingness to play by the rules. Please explain to us why we should trust Epic this time.”
