Will Fortnite, the gaming phenomenon, make its way to the big screen? That’s the question many fans are asking, but it seems that plans for a movie are still far from materializing, according to a former executive of Epic Games.
In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, Donald Mustard, who served as the creative director at Epic Games from 2016 to 2023, discussed the possibility of a film based on the popular Battle Royale game.
Mustard explained that adapting a free-to-play game for cinema poses significant challenges. Although he claims to have a clear vision of how it could be done and considers himself the ideal person for the project, there don’t appear to be immediate plans to make it happen.
“If a Fortnite movie ever exists, I know exactly how it would be done. I believe it could be the best version possible. However, even during my time at Epic Games, there were never concrete plans for a movie, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon,” said Mustard.
While there’s great interest from fans in seeing Fortnite on the big screen, Mustard isn’t optimistic about the realization of this project in the near future.
Other influential names in Hollywood have also expressed interest in a cinematic adaptation of Fortnite. Director Louis Leterrier, known for his work on films like “Fast and Furious X,” revealed in an interview last year his desire to direct a movie based on the game. Similarly, renowned filmmaker Zack Snyder, a self-proclaimed fan of Battle Royale, has also shown interest in participating in such a project.
In 2023, Mustard emphasized that although they weren’t working on a Fortnite movie at that time, he didn’t rule out the possibility of it happening in the future. After leaving Epic Games at the end of that year, he joined AGBO, the production company founded by the Russo brothers.
