The dangers of online gaming have come to light again with an alarming case involving a man who used Fortnite as a means of luring young people into suggestive acts. Authorities announced the arrest of an individual in the Minford, Ohio area of the United States on February 27 following FBI investigations.
The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Nicholas A. Ranieri, is accused of contacting minors through Fortnite and other online games, offering games and items in exchange for inappropriate behavior during Zoom video calls. Following his arrest, Ranieri faces charges including disseminating material harmful to minors and is currently being held in the Scioto County Jail on $125,000 bail after appearing in Portsmouth Municipal Court.
Authorities, led by county sheriff David Thoroughman, searched the suspect’s residence, where they confiscated video game consoles, computers and cell phones. The investigation remains active to determine if there are additional victims or if additional charges will be filed in connection with the case.
This incident highlights the dangers young people face in online environments and highlights the importance of parents being vigilant regarding their children’s online activities. Law enforcement urges citizens to contact authorities if they have any relevant information regarding the ongoing case. This is not the first incident of its kind related to Fortnite, with previous cases recorded in different parts of the world, including an arrest in Brazil in 2021 involving a streamer suspected of child abuse.
