Epic Responds to Controversy Over Inappropriate Skins

In recent years, Fortnite, Epic Games’ successful Battle Royale, has received a multitude of skins and other customization items as part of its seasons and collaborations. Therefore, fans raised their voices when a new update restricted a considerable percentage of this cosmetic content.

A few weeks ago, Epic Games announced that they would implement a new age rating system designed for the Creative Mode. True to their word, the update arrived, and it didn’t take long for players to discover that some skins and items were restricted for being inappropriate for certain islands created by users and the company itself.

While skins and items that received age restrictions can still be used in the Battle Royale, which is the main free-to-play game mode, they are prohibited on islands suitable for users under the age of 12.

After complaints from players, Fortnite will change the new restriction system. According to fan reports, banned skins for being inappropriate include those showing a weapon or those that are too frightening for children.

For example, Clare Redfield, Leon S. Kennedy, Deadpool, Harley Quinn, Terminator, Lara Croft, and Nathan Drake are some of the skins that have age restrictions and cannot be used on certain Creative Mode levels due to having a visible weapon in the outfit, while Carnage, the Xenomorph, Keleritas, and Venom are also banned from certain islands for being terrifying monsters.

Amidst the controversy, the development studio stated that the restriction applied to approximately 7% of Fortnite skins.

This change has generated discontent within the community, which took to social media to express their dissatisfaction and demand refunds. Epic Games acknowledges that the new system has made players uncomfortable, thus confirming that they will change their approach and already have some plans in progress.

“We’ll, our plan for cosmetics with the update of qualifications missed the mark. We’re working on some new options that we hope to implement for, let’s say… some kind of big in-game event. Stay tuned, we’ll keep you informed,” the company stated through Fortnite’s official account.

It remains to be seen what changes the system will undergo, but the community celebrated that Epic Games acknowledged its mistake.
