They Run DOOM in Fortnite and Add Battle Royale Mechanics

The challenge of making the original DOOM run on any platform continues, and now a developer has managed to integrate it into Fortnite. Moreover, he used this unique project to incorporate Epic Games’ Battle Royale mechanics into id Software’s classic FPS.

Jackson Clayton, an independent developer, shared a video on his social media showcasing the result of this unusual initiative. The video surprised fans of both franchises, as it’s now possible to build in DOOM as if you were playing Fortnite.

DOOM Now Running in Fortnite with Building Elements

Clayton explained that he couldn’t provide all the technical details on how he managed to run DOOM inside Fortnite, but he assured that it was a significant learning process. He mentioned that he exported the DOOM E1M1 files as a 3D model.

To do this, he used the Ultimate DOOM Builder, an FPS level editor, and transferred the content to the Unreal Editor for Fortnite, Epic Games’ tool for designing, developing, and publishing video games. Next, Clayton focused on removing certain engine effects, giving the game a pixelated look. He also used tools to create a visually appealing spinning effect.

As a final touch, Clayton added Fortnite’s building mechanics to DOOM. This way, players can create platforms and various structures within the classic FPS, something that will undoubtedly astonish id Software fans.

Clayton described the experience as full of challenges but expressed his satisfaction with the final results. In recent years, the gaming community has managed to run DOOM in unexpected places, such as on lawnmowers, gut bacteria, and even within DOOM itself.
